Koftas are a super easy way to introduce meat to your baby because it’s in the form of mince. Mince is a great starting point for meat—it naturally breaks apart in the mouth, making it easier for babies to manage as they’re learning to chew. Plus, offering meat in this form means there’s a better chance your baby will actually eat (and absorb!) some of that all-important iron, which is essential for growth and development. These Moroccan beef and prune koftas were inspired by my trip to Morocco when I was young and free travelling. I had one of the most amazing beef and prune tagines in Marrakesh which was one of the nicest dishes I had on the trip. The koftas are full of iron, zinc, protein, fat and flavour. Perfect BLW first food for starting solids. There’s added fibre in the koftas from the flaxseed and prunes – bonus!
2tspmixed spice (Hoyt's brand at the supermarket has a great mixed spice blend)
2tbspground flax seeds
4 prunes, finely diced
1smallhandful chopped mint
1small handful chopped parsley
1tbspextra virgin olive oil
Instructions
Turn oven on and heat to 180 degrees C. Line the baking tray with baking paper.
In the large mixing bowl add all of the ingredients and mix to combine.
Take a small golf ball sized piece of meat mixture and shape into 5cm little kofta logs.
Place the koftas onto the baking tray and place in the oven to bake for 10 minutes. Turn the koftas over at 5 minutes.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. These are great to serve with yoghurt as a dip and cucumber/tomato fingers.
Notes
This meal can easily be turned into a combination weaning meal by adding a yoghurt dip. This way your baby can practice hand eye co-ordination by dipping the koftas into the yoghurt.
